How Tap-to-Pay Works

What is a tap card? It is an EMV chip card with the chip being enhanced to process transactions in close proximity to card terminals without directly physically interacting with it

How do I use tap-to-pay? At your payment terminal look for a contactless/tap logo and tap your card to the screen, specifically the chip.

Where can I use my tap card? Look for a contactless/tap logo at the payment terminal to show where to tap your card, specifically the chip. If the merchant doesn’t have tap payment enabled, your card still has a functional EMV chip or magnetic stripe to process your transaction.

Do I still have to insert or swipe my card sometimes? Yes if the merchant doesn’t have tap payment enabled

Is there a limit on tap transactions? No

Do I need to enter my PIN when using tap? If PIN is requested by the merchant then it may, but you can often bypass a PIN and run the transaction as credit if you prefer

Mobile Wallets & Digital Payments

How do I add my new tap card to Apple Pay, Google Pay, or Samsung Pay? For mobile payment applications, you can conveniently activate those for your new card through the Card Controls service in our digital banking platform. Alternatively, you can also request a new token provisioning through the mobile payment application directly, but that may require a call to the bank as a verification measure.

Can I still use Venmo, PayPal, Cash App, etc. with my new card? Yes, but it is recommended to ensure the card information is up to date on your apps.

Will recurring payments (subscriptions, bills) be affected? Any subscriptions tied to your debit card will continue to process, but for the sake of diligence we do recommend taking the opportunity to update your payment information with the new expiration and CVV.

Security & Fraud

Is tap-to-pay safe? Yes, it is still EMV chip security but with the ease of access through close proximity to terminals

How does tap-to-pay protect my information? The necessary payment information is stored within the chip technology, rather than communicating with external sources. As a result there is a single place for the information to be stored and potentially discovered, as opposed to multiple locations like mag stripe technology requires.

What happens if my card is lost or stolen? Lost or stolen debit cards should be reported to the bank in order to ensure no additional transactions can be attempted. Call 217-228-8000 during business hours or 877-228-8001 after hours. A fee for replacement may apply.

Can someone accidentally charge my card just by being near me? It is possible, but unlikely. Tap works by emitting a wifi-like signal from the chip, which only works from a 2-inch radius.

Will I still receive fraud alerts? Yes, standard fraud alerts will apply.

Can I turn my card on/off or manage it through digital banking? Yes, all features in Card Controls will continue to function.

Usage & Account Impact

Why am I receiving a new tap card? Our current chip technology was reaching end of life, and as a result was less functional than our valued customers deserve. In response, we’ve enabled this enhanced card product and provided it to all current card users.

Will my PIN stay the same? Yes, if PIN is already set then it will remain the same.

Will my account number change? No

Will my daily limits change? No

Will my card expiration date change? Yes, as well as the CVV on the back

Will there be any interruption to my card usage? No
