January 28th is Data Privacy Day – an international effort to create awareness about the importance of respecting privacy, safeguarding data and enabling trust.

As your bank of choice and valuing the importance of your bank account information, First Bankers Trust Company supports the National Cyber Security Alliance in encouraging you to “Own Your Privacy.”

You can do your part by learning more about how to protect your data online and encouraging businesses to respect your personal and account information.

“At FBTC protecting your private information is woven into the fabric of our business. It’s simply about trust,” says Nikki Cain, VP Enterprise Risk Management at First Bankers Trust. “While we hold some of your most personal information, we are only a portion of the privacy equation.  It takes action and good data habits on your part as well.”

Personal info is like money: Value it. Protect it.

Personal information, such as your purchase history, IP address, or location, has tremendous value to businesses – just like the money in your checking or savings account. Be sure to consider whether you want businesses to have that information or if it will truly help improve your experience.

Manage your apps

Apps on your mobile devices are convenient, but many ask for access to a great deal of your personal information. It could be photos, personal information, contacts, location and more. Be careful and selective on what apps are asking for when you start to use them. Don’t just accept the terms without giving them consideration and always be sure to delete apps that you don’t normally use.

Update and manage your settings

Start with your bank account app and go through your other apps and websites to check that the settings are set the way you want them. You can limit the amount and types of information that is shared in most sites. Refer to the NCSA’s Manage Your Privacy Settings page for more tips and tricks.

We understand the importance of your bank accounts and to do our part to help keep your information secure, our customers can use our encrypted site (look for https in the url), user name and password authentication plus behavioral and device multi-factor authentication, detailed verification at time of sign up, and additional security questions at account access. Plus with the FBTC Mobile App, you can safely use biometrics like face or fingerprint ID.
